Which mobile devices are enterprises using most?

sophosphonesFrom time to time you read from industry analysts about the market share of the various mobile device vendors and operating systems. For example, Gartner recently published research showing that Android is dominating the consumer market with a 79% market share in the second quarter of this year, while Samsung leads the consumer market among device makers with a 32% share.

I was interested to find out, what devices and operating systems lead the enterprise market? I had a look at the Sophos Mobile Control SaaS offering to give me some indication, and the results were somewhat surprising.

Of the devices managed by our mobile device management solution in the enterprise, iOS is far and away the leading platform with a 77% share, followed by Android with 22% and Windows Phone with just 1%. OK, so Windows Phone 8 was only released at the end of last year, but so far it hasn’t made much of an impact on the enterprise market, at least for the companies using the hosted Sophos Mobile Control service.

I also checked for jailbroken or rooted devices. I was interested to see how many companies will accept such devices. On our servers only 0.6% of all devices are rooted or jailbroken. Not much. But as a security-oriented guy, I would have expected even less. Maybe it is acceptable for some companies, but I would regard this as a risky behavior.
